UMNO is setting its sight on Sabah, after successfully replacing a few Menteri Besars and the Prime Minister.
The most recent replacement of a Bersatu PM with an UMNO PM is not UMNO’s first successful coup, with similar feats in Johor, Melaka and Perak in the past 18 months.
These states used to have a Menteri Besar or Chief Minister from another party, before being replaced by an UMNO candidate eventually.
Sabah is the only administration in the country with a Bersatu man as the head of the government.
A source in UMNO who spoke on condition of anonymity said, these successes are to be credited to UMNO President, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
“After GE14, UMNO lost almost everything.”
“We were only left with Pahang and Perlis,” he said in reference to UMNO’s Perlis MB, Datuk Seri Azlan Man and UMNO’s Pahang MB, Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail.
“But today, we have successfully taken control over the State Governments in Johor, Melaka and Perak. We have also taken control over the Federal Government,” he added.
He was referring to Datuk Hasni Mohammad who is UMNO’s Johor MB, Datuk Seri Sulaiman Ali who is UMNO’s Melaka CM, Datuk Saarani Mohamad who is UMNO’s Perak MB and Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob who is UMNO’s Prime Minister.
For the record, Hasni replaced Bersatu’s Datuk Sahruddin Jamal as Johor MB in February 2020, while Sulaiman replaced Amanah’s Adly Zahari as Melaka CM in March 2020.
Saarani replaced Bersatu’s Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu as Perak MB in December 2020, while Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob replaced Bersatu’s Tan Sri Mahiaddin Md. Yasin as Prime Minister.
“All these successes are due to our President. He is the driving force behind UMNO’s successes in regaining control over the Federal Government and various State Governments.”
“The more Governments we control, the more resources and machinery will be under our control. It will be put us in a better position for the election.”
“Now we will have a look at what we can do in Sabah. But I am confident that we can have our own man as Sabah CM.”
Sabah’s CM, Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor is a former UMNO-man who quit the party in December 2018 before joining Bersatu.
Deputy Chief Minister, Datuk Bung Moktar Radin who is from UMNO has been said to be vying for the Sabah Chief Ministership since the last State Election in September 2020.
