Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin is expected to declare an emergency to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic, despite claiming the situation is under control earlier this month.
On October 3, Muhyiddin through a press statement called upon the public to remain calm, as the situation is under control.
“I would like to call upon all to remain calm in facing this Covid-19 pandemic.”
“I want to emphasise that things are under control and the pandemic can be taken care of, thanks to cooperation and constant monitoring by the Ministry of Health.”
Nevertheless, a u-turn has been made, when the Cabinet meeting chaired by Muhyiddin himself today agreed to call for an emergency.
“Wait for the announcement,” said a Minister who refused to be named.
Calling an emergency may be the best way to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic. But, it is also a backdoor way for Muhyiddin to avoid dissolving Parliament, should he lose the slim majority he has.
This is because the Federal Constitution can be suspended, paving way for the elections to be avoided.
Meanwhile, it was also reported that the word “emergency” would be avoided so as to not cause public unrest.
“They will not call it an emergency, but a different name. Something related to Covid-19,” said the source.
