Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan has made a u-turn.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, he finally conceded that all health issues should be managed by Sabah, in order to better handle the Covid-19 pandemic.
“I understand this need for us to have our own enactment to give us power to address the pandemic or any diseases in Sabah.
“In my personal opinion, it (the power) should be under Sabah.”
The STAR President added that this could be done in the future.
“We must create the enactment to support it so that we have the necessary power and the second part it, we must have the money to run it.”
For the record, former Sabah Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Panglima Shafie Apdal had previously created and restructured three new Ministries during the Warisan administration.
The Ministries are the Education and Innovation Ministry, the Health and People’s Wellbeing Ministry and the Law and Native Affairs Ministry.
But Jeffrey as Opposition back then, belittled such efforts.
In a statement released on 1 September 2020, during the Sabah State Election campaign period, Jeffrey had insinuated that the new Ministers would be getting ‘gaji buta’ while new Ministries would involve substantial expenditure.
“What led Shafie to suddenly realise that he needs new ministries?”
“Would it not be just a plain waste of money? Were the Ministers and Assistants getting gaji buta?”
“This feat that will incur substantial expenditure, administrative costs and emoluments.”
“This grand plan seems ridiculous.”
The Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) loose coalition had then decided to abolish the Sabah Health Ministry, after coming into power.
